Luke McCowan was the standout performer on a night of strong showings for Celtic against Stuttgart.
The midfielder has found starts few and far between under Martin O’Neill, but within seconds of kick-off, he rewarded his manager’s faith tonight.
Celtic’s midfield has been subjected to plenty of criticism, and McCowan may have just played his way into it.
After the bittersweet win, The 28-year-old has spoken to the media.

Asked about what Callum McGregor told the Celtic players before the game, McCowan said: “[McGregor] is always inspiring with his words before we go out and in the huddle.
“We just knew we had to start the game quick, and it obviously was.

“I just wish we pushed on in the first half, especially, to get the second one – because I felt that we were actually comfortable in parts of the game and had a threat. The edge is what we’re missing.
“It was just about doing ourselves proud. Probably, in the last game we played, we didn’t do ourselves proud. We needed to just go and show it.
“When we step into games like this on the biggest stage, it’s about trying to do yourself proud and do your family proud.
“That was the message with Cal before we went out: ‘just stay clear-headed and push hard’, and we did.
“100%, [I want to be part of this]. When I’m given my chance, I’ve got to try and take it.
“I don’t know what the seconds were. 29? So that’s a good way to start. I need to get myself in for the bigger games.
“I need to keep myself right, mentally focused and be prepared.”
McCowan’s goal was expertly taken, but ultimately not enough to reverse the aggregate scoreline.
