We continue our series of articles with freelance journalist and co-host of the Lazio Lounge podcast Alasdair Mackenzie regarding the upcoming Celtic and Lazio Europa League matches. On this occasion, we discussed how some Lazio fans feel about the competition in general and got a prediction for the game from Alasdair.
According to Alasdair, the Europa League is not the highest priority for the club, and it is even less so for the selection of the club’s fans.
“An irritating and tiring distraction”
“The top priority is Champions League qualification through a top four finish in the league and no secret has been made of that…the Europa League is seen by a decent contingent of fans as an irritating and tiring distraction” he said.
It is interesting that both Lazio and Celtic have top properties that don’t involved the Europa League. Lazio’s is top make the Champions League, and Celtic’s is to make it nine titles in a row.
Hoops fans will want run in Europe
However, it is unlikely that Celtic fans will ever feel that a run in Europe is ‘irritating’, unlike their Lazio counterparts. Some fans may, but the majority would like to see the Hoops have another decent run in Europe. The priority though, is the title.
We then asked Alasdair to give a prediction for the game at Celtic Park.
“Given how badly Lazio are travelling this season, their inconsistent form and the likelihood of a rotated team being picked that is missing some key players, I’d have to sadly go for a Celtic win: 2-1.”
That all sounds promising from a Celtic perspective. However, Neil Lennon won’t be taking anything for granted. Celtic will still need to play very well to get a victory at Celtic Park.
There has to be a concern as well that the players who could in to the Lazio side will be looking to take their chance. A good performance against the Hoops could see them picked as regulars.
However, Celtic should go into the game with confidence. A win would make the Hoops favourite to progress to the last 32 of the competition. Hopefully Alasdair’s prediction comes true and it’s a glory night for Celtic.
