Jamie Carragher reacted to Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic suffering a 6-0 defeat to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League.

It was an evening to forget for Bhoys in Group E, with Jamie Carragher stating ‘let’s not forget that Celtic were down to ten men’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (07/11/23 at 10:55 pm).

That early red card for Daizen Maeda was a body blow to the team because, the scoreline was already 1-0 to the home side, and it just turned the screw further in their favour – A BBC reporter shared how Brendan Rodgers reacted on the touchline to the red card.

That keeps Celtic on one point in the group, with that only point at home to Atletico Madrid, with chances of progressing to the knockout stages now all but out of the window.

There is still a chance of Europa League football, but you think maximum points will be needed, with Carragher noting how Atletico Madrid will need a favour from the Scottish champions.

The La Liga giants are now sitting top of Group E and Carragher thinks that Atletico Madrid will now ‘better hope’ that Celtic can take points off Lazio and Feyenoord.

Celtic defeat against Atletico Madrid

“Let’s not forget Celtic were down to ten, so it was always going to be a tough night for them,” said Carragher. “It was about Celtic trying to keep the score down, they just couldn’t.

“The problem they (Atletico Madrid) had is they dropped points against Celtic (in the 2-2 draw), nobody had dropped points against Celtic up until now. They played them twice, so it was vital that they got four points out of the six against Celtic.

“Now, they better hope that Celtic can maybe take points off someone else in the last couple of games and they do their own job as well (to progress).”

What next for Celtic?

Another hiding in the Champions League. Another season where it seems as though there will be no Europe after Christmas.

It’s frustrating and annoying for the fans. But how do Celtic address the issue?

Some would point towards what the club do in the transfer market and how that extra risk needs to be taken in order to take that extra step in Europe.

If that doesn’t happen, then situations like this will only repeat itself. Taking that extra risk is worth it because of the reward at the end of it all.
