Celtic’s great week could get even better should they defeat Motherwell in the last game before the international break against Motherwell on Sunday.
One interesting aspect of the game will be the team that is selected by Neil Lennon. He will have to deal with the inevitable fatigue that the players will have after defeating Lazio 2-1 on Thursday to clinch Celtic’s first ever win in Italy.
That might mean the Hoops boss makes a few changes to his side. For example, Jeremie Frimpong may well start. The same could be true of Nir Bitton. But what about Leigh Griffiths?
Neil Lennon confirmed on Friday, as reported by BBC Sport, that the striker is once more fit, and could be involved in a Celtic game for the first-time since August.
Asking too much to start game
Would it be asking too much of Griffiths to start the game? It would seem so. After all, he hasn’t played football for three months. However, he should still be involved in the game at some stage.
Odsonne Edouard should not play the entire game. It would be asking too much of him to play another 90 minutes after playing the lone striker role against Lazio, a game which he worked very hard in.
Therefore, it seems inevitable that Edouard will be substituted during the game. The ideal replacement is Griffiths. It would be ideal for Griffiths if he got to play the last half an hour of the game. It would demonstrate that the player will be available for selection after the winter break if he comes through the half-hour unscathed.
Could give Hoops the energy they need if required
There has to be a danger that Celtic may be sluggish against Motherwell after such a momentous night in Rome. That is where a player like Griffiths could be ideal. He could provide the Hoops with some much-required energy in the second-half, if Celtic are needing a goal.
He might not be ready to start a game for the Hoops, but there is no doubt that Griffiths should feature at some stage of the game.
