One of Celtic’s few summer signings featured for the club in a recent cup tie – but he was unable to prevent the Hoops from crashing to defeat.

Luca Connell, who signed from Bolton, played for the Hoops development side in the Glasgow Cup against Clyde. Unfortunately, the player was on the losing side, as Celtic lost 3-1 on Tuesday night.

However, the Hoops academy side have a chance to make up for the loss, as the tournament is not a straight knockout competition this season.

Not in current first-team plans

As for Connell, it is fair to say that he is currently not in the manager’s first-team plans. If he was, he would not be playing in a cup tie two days before the Europa League match against AIK.

Connell seems to have been signed with the future in mind. This does make sense, as he is only 18. However, the fact that he played for Bolton’s first-team indicates that he could be ready for first-team football for Celtic.

Could make breakthrough eventually this season

That does not seem to be Neil Lennon’s plan at the moment though. Perhaps in the months to come Connell will make his first-team breakthrough for the club.

For the moment though, it seems that he will be learning his trade for the Hoops academy side. Only time will tell if this is the right decision.
