Thelo Aasgaard has been sent a strong message about the red card he received against Celtic after Michael Stewart’s strange comments.

Former FIFA referee Mark Clattenburg was in no doubt about the decision to send off the Rangers midfielder after his shocking tackle on Celtic defender, Anthony Ralston.

Aasgaard went in with a high boot, studs up and raked down Ralston’s leg leaving stud-shaped welts and scrapes on the Celtic full-back’s thigh.

Michael Stewart’s ‘initial reaction’ was to brand the tackle a ‘sore one’ and understood why the referee branded the red card despite the Premier Sports pundit saying ‘there was no malice’ in the tackle on the Celtic man.

The tackle was reckless and dangerous and former FIFA referee Clattenburg agrees with the decision.

Mark Clattenburg tells Rangers they ‘can have no complaints’ about Celtic red card

Aasgaard left Rangers deep in trouble with his ordering off and Clattenburg said the midfielder has no one to blame but himself.

Clattenburg told 67 Hail Hail, “Thelo Aasgaard can have no complaints for his red card against Celtic.

“He plays the ball over his head and then comes into his opponent with his speed and with his studs high which catches his opponent high on the leg.

“This type of challenge can endanger the safety of his opponent and was rightly sent off from the referee who had a perfect position to see the challenge.”

Straight to the point and no fence-sitting like Stewart’s verdict appeared to be.

Clattenburg’s verdict on two other big Celtic vs Rangers decisions

Of course, this wasn’t the only decision that was deemed contentious as Celtic beat Rangers at Hampden.

Clattenburg also branded Celtic defender Auston Trusty a ‘lucky boy’ for his kick out at Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The former Premier League referee also said he could understand why Rangers were awarded a penalty after Celtic’s Anthony Ralston was adjudged to have handled the ball as he fell in the penalty box blocking a shot on goal.

The Glasgow Derby encounter was a fiery affair and in stark contrast to the drab 0-0 Ibrox draw back in August.
