BBC Sportscene pundit Michael Stewart has been talking up the qualities of Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley tonight after his excellent performance for the Bhoys on Saturday.
O’Riley came on at half-time against St Johnstone and tore the visitors apart, scoring two goals as part of a massive 7-0 victory.
The Danish youth international has had to remain patient for chances in recent weeks due to the form of Tom Rogic but looks well-placed for a starting berth soon.
Stewart was impressed, telling Sportscene: “He’s very good. There’s stiff competition in the middle of the park for Celtic and Matt O’Riley has come in to do extremely well. These are two great goals.
“It’s a really nice header. The next one though is just right out of the top drawer.
“The composure, the balance and the accuracy when it comes into him in such a tight area with so many players around him. A little shift, move and smash into the top corner – he’s a silky player, he’s a classy player.”
It’s incredible to think O’Riley is still just 21. He has so much potential in a Celtic shirt. You get the feeling we’re only really scratching the surface of what he can offer the Bhoys.
He’s an outstanding long-term replacement for Tom Rogic and while they’re both here, they can contribute together. He plays with that poise and composure.
With a full pre-season under Ange Postecoglou and more time with this group of players, next season could be a big one for the former MK Dons man.
