Michael Stewart has called out the start to the season from Celtic as he labelled the Hoops’ form “extremely poor”.
Celtic lost their third Premiership game out of six this season at Livingston. The 1-0 loss at the Tony Macaroni Arena saw Ange Postecoglou slip where Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon did before him.
However, more concerningly, we’re now in sixth place after six Premiership matches. Whilst there have been signs of improvement, Celtic still have a massive problem getting the job done away from Parkhead. And Stewart was in no mood to let the Bhoys off the hook after today’s loss followed similar at Tynecastle and Ibrox.
Celtic fans have been delighted with some of the football played under Ange Postecoglou this season. The gung-ho nature of his setup has at times been a joy to watch.
However, this afternoon’s defeat hasn’t been a rarity. Defensive issues and a lack of squad depth have left the Hoops with plenty of early-season issues despite some of the promising signs.
Celtic honeymoon period is over for Ange Postecoglou; Michael Stewart not wrong
Postecoglou has certainly been given room to breathe as Celtic manager. Fans have been willing to overlook certain disappointments due to the job that’s on his hands.
However, today’s defeat simply can’t be excused. Save me the plastic pitch garbage. We can’t use that as an excuse for failing to find a solution. Every time our title rivals pop up at Livingston they seem to find a way over the line. It’s extremely disappointing that we therefore continue to fail in doing so.
Postecoglou had a big chance to close the gap on Rangers by two points. In fact, whilst we’re at it, we had a big opportunity to close the gap on Hearts and Hibs too. So long as they’re still in the mix they have to be taken seriously. We have no right to dismiss anyone given our current league form.
We said after the Glasgow Derby defeat that Ange needs to try and get some momentum going domestically. Today was a big chance to do just that. A chance for the weekend to go perfectly and at a key time of the season. Instead, we’re left licking our wounds once more and counting the cost of defensive mistakes.
Next up for Celtic is Raith Rovers at Parkhead. Winning that should be an inevitability, but the Hoops players owe the fans a performance for what we watched today.
It may still be very early on in the campaign, but Celtic are already leaving themselves very little room for error.
