Celtic interim manager Neil Lennon has revealed that Hoops left-back Kieran Tierney could miss Sunday’s Glasgow derby against Rangers.
Lennon confirmed that the player has suffered a reaction to the calf injury which forced him to miss Scotland’s recent fixtures.
“May be a doubt”
“Kieran has had a bit of a reaction today and may be a doubt. We will have to assess him tomorrow” Lennon told the Evening Times.
“It is the same issue, and we will leave it maybe as late as possible to see how it is. He looked uncomfortable, so we will give it 24 hours to see how it goes.”
A big blow for the player
Whilst it would be a blow for Celtic if Tierney missed the game, it would be an even bigger blow for the player.
Tierney has struggled with injury issues this season. A hip problem forced him to miss almost two months of games before Christmas.
Now he has to deal with this calf issue. Whilst Lennon says the Hoops will leave it to the last possible moment to give Tierney a chance of playing, the diagnosis doesn’t sound promising.
It could be too much of a gamble to risk playing Tierney, no matter how much he wants to. Celtic won’t want to make the injury worse.
Should Tierney miss the game it seems likely that either Jonny Hayes or Emilio Izaguirre will replace him in the starting line-up.
