Celtic interim manager Neil Lennon has hinted at some big changes for Wednesday night’s trip to St Mirren.
The Hoops are looking like needing patched up once again after their 2-1 win over Rangers at Parkhead yesterday. Both Dedryck Boyata and Kieran Tierney came off with injuries. In addition to that, both Olivier Ntcham and Tom Rogic didn’t look 100% fit.
Celtic are now 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership with just seven games remaining. It would take one almighty disaster for the Hoops to concede the title now. Therefore, Lennon can perhaps afford to experiment.
And speaking in the Daily Record ahead of a crucial match against the Buddies this week, Lennon was quick to hint at an injection of freshness for Wednesday night.
“We will have to maybe freshen things up a little bit. Obviously, we will look to Izaguirre, Simunovic and Benkovic is nearly fit as well. It’s not bad strength in depth and you have the likes of Weah and Burke who will be fresh as well.
“I think it’s important to get Ntcham and Callum [McGregor], that’s a good triumvirate there with Broony.
“A strong midfield, good balance and it looked that way for as long as Oli was on the pitch really. Then you had Tom to come on, but we had to change things very quickly with Dedryck going off we had to drop Tom back in an unaccustomed role.”
Big chances for Burke and Weah?
Lennon didn’t expand too much here. Hopefully, he was meaning more than just defensive changes due to the Boyata and Tierney injuries respectively.
He did name-drop both Burke and Weah, however, and how we could both do with seeing more of them. Jonny Hayes and James Forrest didn’t do badly against Rangers. Considering Odsonne Edouard scored the goal, meanwhile, you have to wonder who could drop out.
The interim boss has categorically stated he wants to continue with the midfield three of Callum McGregor, Scott Brown, and Ntcham. But he didn’t elaborate on who could potentially be sacrificed for the midfield trio.
But Lennon has confirmed he will freshen things up. That alone is a fine boost heading into a big game on Wednesday night. A win over St Mirren will leave us just two games from the title.
The end line is in sight, but it’s important to continue powering ahead to the title, and not stuttering.
