Neil Lennon should end Betfred Cup goalkeeper rotation

Since Neil Lennon signed Fraser Forster on loan, he has been the first choice Celtic goalkeeper in practically every game. There has been one exception though.

Forster didn’t feature in the Betfred Cup quarter-final win against Partick Thistle. Craig Gordon was in goals for that game. Indeed, Gordon has played in both of the Hoops’ Betfred Cup ties so far this season.

That might well indicate that Lennon has decided that Gordon will be his Betfred Cup goalkeeper. A rotation policy. That is what Brendan Rodgers done last season, as Scott Bain was his Betfred Cup goalkeeper. However, Neil Lennon should end that rotation policy.

He should put Forster back in goals for the Betfred Cup semi-final against Hibs on Saturday. That is no slight on Gordon, who has been a good goalkeeper for the Hoops over the years.

In excellent form

The reason that Forster should start against Hibs is because of the excellent run of form he is currently in. He was particularly good for the Hoops in the recent 2-1 win over Lazio in the Europa League.

He is playing too well to be left out of the side. Lennon may have been playing Gordon to give him some game time in the event of Forster getting injured.

Will be desperate to play

However, Forster will be desperate to keep playing. It should be remembered that he rarely played a first-team match for Southampton last season. He will be more than eager to make up for lost time.

Gordon might well be annoyed if he is not selected to play against Hibs. However, it is in the best interest of the team to if the strongest side is selected.

That means a return to the starting line-up for Forster. He has earned the right to start the game and help the Hoops reach a fourth consecutive Betfred Cup final.
