Pundit Neil McCann was left impressed by the performance of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer on Sunday, even comparing him to Brazilian football legend Cafu on BBC Scotland (live match page 25/08, 16:25).
Ajer was one of the Hoops’ top performers against Craig Levein’s side at Celtic Park. He produced a swashbuckling display on the right flank in place of the injured Hatem Abd Elhamed.
Regularly finding space and exploiting the Hearts defensive line, it was his low cross that led to our third goal of the afternoon.
McCann was apparently stunned by the performance.
He told BBC Scotland (live match page 25/08, 16:25): “Kristoffer Ajer is looking like Cafu here. He is bombing up and down the right flank and has the freedom of Celtic Park.”
While I’m sure tongue was firmly in cheek with the comparison, the comments do sum up just how much time and space Ajer had to really have a go at our visitors today.
Still just 21, the young defender is rapidly becoming every bit the beating heart of this Celtic side. He deserves all the plaudits coming his way.
We still need to sign a quality right-back to provide competition for the Israeli international Elhamed. However, for now, we can enjoy Ajer giving it his all in the position in every single match.
The young player is well on his way to becoming a superstar and we shouldn’t take his contributions for granted.
Although there’s no sign of him leaving Celtic Park any time soon, any cash rich clubs would be crazy not to be taking a serious look at him right now.
