Neil McCann says Brendan Rodgers ‘rubbing salt into Rangers wounds’ with Celtic comments

Celtic’s dominance under Brendan Rodgers continued at Hampden on Sunday.

It was a thrilling finale that saw six goals scored, and extra time, but Celtic were victorious over Rangers on penalties.

Daizen Maeda netted the trophy-winning penalty and it further showcased the brilliance of Rodgers because he was asked serious questions throughout a topsy-turvy game.

Rangers went 1-0 ahead in the first half and the Celtic boss made the bold call to replace Auston Trusty for Liam Scales at the break because he wasn’t happy with the team’s build-up play.

It worked a treat because the champions looked like a different animal during the second period, even though they continued to shoot themselves in the foot with poor defending and let two leads slip.

At the end of it all, Rodgers’ outstanding record against Rangers continued, including not losing to Philippe Clement.

Brendan Rodgers digs at Rangers after Celtic win League Cup final

Over two spells as Celtic manager, Rodgers has only suffered one defeat in the Glasgow derby and has won every final he has entered, including winning two finals against Rangers in 2024.

But, as Neil McCann touched upon, Rodgers couldn’t help but ‘rub salt into Rangers wounds’ by talking about ‘what it’s like to be a super successful side’ after the Hampden thriller, as he told Sportscene.

This is, of course, a stab at Rangers, who haven’t just been woeful for over a decade now, but can’t even beat Celtic.

“It’s unbelievable,” said McCann about Rodgers’ record against Rangers. “He is talking about what’s it like to be a super successful side.

“I mean, it’s almost like rubbing salt into the wounds of Rangers. But he is allowed to say it. He has been absolutely impeccable as a Celtic manager. Another trophy for Celtic.”

How many trophies have Celtic won under Rodgers?

You could argue that Celtic’s win over Rangers at the weekend was perhaps the best of the lot because of how everything unfolded.

But it showed that, even in such a dramatic game, Rodgers can and will still come out on top.

That’s trophy number ten in Glasgow for the Irishman and, with the Treble still on this season, you can bet your bottom dollar that there is more to come.
