Odsonne Edouard vs Alfredo Morelos – which one would you have in your team?
Would it be the reliable Glasgow derby king? Or would it be the absolute liability?
Yes, there’s been a long-standing opinion among many in the Scottish game that Morelos is the best striker in Scotland. After all, he has a cool 29 goals in all competitions this season. He’s scored a terrific amount of goals, and does deserve credit for it.
But the best in Scotland? Not as long as French Eddy’s around.
Once again, Edouard proved himself to be the man for the big occasion. Whenever he got the ball, he bossed Rangers back-line around the place. Be it through his good footwork or his burst of pace, Edouard had the beating of Connor Goldson and Joe Worrall.
His goal was just symbolic of his quality this afternoon. Twisting and turning around several Rangers players, he fired with aplomb beyond Allan McGregor. He then set up the winner in the closing stages by luring two Rangers defenders his way before squaring for James Forrest.
…..and what did Morelos do again?
Meanwhile, Rangers’ Morelos was getting sent off for elbowing Scott Brown in a moment of sheer madness. The red mist descended upon him for the fifth time this season, and he was shown the tunnel.
Edouard continued his knack of popping up for Neil Lennon when it matters most. In the closing stages of Celtic’s wins against Hearts and Dundee recently, it was he who scored those vital late winners in both games. Today, he was a constant thorn for Rangers and the outstanding forward on the pitch.
Today’s strike was his fourth in five Glasgow derby matches. Morelos, meanwhile, is still looking for his first in eight opportunities. In terms of big-game players, there’s just no contest between Edouard and Morelos.
He stood up when his team needed him today. Morelos, however, shrank and didn’t look anywhere near the level of the big Frenchman.
It simply ends the debate about who the classier player is. Edouard has put Rangers to the sword both home and away. Morelos simply struggles to stand out whatsoever in the fixture.
It’s 19 goals in the season for Edouard. He’s becoming a key figure under Lennon and deserves to be in contention for the Player of the Year awards.
He is, after all, the best and most reliable striker in the country.
