Pat Bonner and BBC pundit’s spot Celtic penalty claim vs Hibs VAR might have missed

Celtic struggled to break down Hibs in the 0-0 draw at Parkhead.

Despite Celtic having plenty of chances to beat Hibs, Brendan Rodgers’ side played out a scoreless stalemate against the capital club.

As Hibs parked the bus at Celtic Park, the Bhoys spurned seven opportunities to open the scoring as Kelechi Iheanacho missed two glaring chances and Johnny Kenny miscued a last-minute header.

However, it appears that Celtic could, and probably should, have had a penalty after Pat Bonner and fellow BBC pundit Derek Ferguson spotted a handball by Hibs’ Jordan Obita that VAR might have missed.

Hibs’ Jordan Obita’s ‘handball’ vs Celtic

Whilst there wasn’t too much controversy surrounding the match (apart from Hibs’ time wasting tactics) it appears that Celtic may well have been denied a spot kick just minutes into the match.

Bonner said on BBC Sportsound’s Open all Mics, “Ohh, I actually think there was a handball just inside the box from Obita.

“It was a cross from Tony Ralston, and I thought his arm, you could check it out, I thought his arm was up just inside the box.”

Derek Ferguson agreed, “His right hand looks up Pat.”

Kenny McIntyre: “Ralston is certainly claiming for it.”

Ferguson: “The first view, we’ll get a closer look just now. When he turned, he turned his back, didn’t he Pat? It looked as if his arm was up as well.

Bonner: “But there’s been no shout and VAR hasn’t kicked in. Whether it could kick in at any point in time, I’m not too sure.

“The ball has to go out of play, or can the referee stop it?”

Celtic can’t blame VAR for Hibs draw

As much as it would be good to see this incident again, VAR didn’t cost Celtic the win against Hibs.

Poor finishing, no luck in front of goal and just a bad day at the office cost Celtic the three points as, overall, the team did play well.

On any other day that game would have been a 3-0 win for Celtic but it just wasn’t to be.

Rodgers must now ensure that when SC Braga come calling on Thursday night, the chances missed against Hibs are buried if the Celtic boss wants to have any chance of qualifying from the Europa League this season.
