Pat Bonner loved Adam Idah’s actions during Celtic’s win over St Mirren

Brendan Rodgers needed a reaction from his Celtic players and he got one on Sunday.

To nobody’s surprise, after Celtic’s horror show at Ibrox, several changes were made for the visit of St Mirren, including Adam Idah starting instead of Kyogo Furuhashi.

Celtic’s starting forward was one of several big names dropped to the bench, including midfielder Reo Hatate and centre-back, Liam Scales.

That freshness worked a treat because the Hoops recorded a 3-0 win over St Mirren to move 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

Nicolas Kuhn netted a brace and Auston Trusty also got on the scoresheet, whilst Idah played 83 minutes before being subbed off for Kyogo.

Pat Bonner praises Adam Idah’s defensive work as Celtic beat St Mirren

Yes, Celtic fans will point towards Idah not scoring and how that centre-forward role isn’t ticking or flowing as well as they would like.

But to drop some positivity into all of this, Pat Bonner rightfully praised the desire and defensive work of Idah in the second half.

The legendary goalkeeper ‘loved’ Idah winning the ball back from St Mirren forward Toyosi Olusanya, as he told BBC Radio Scotland.

“The referee is going to allow on Olusanya, who is feeling the effects of that Adam Idah challenge, which is an entirely fair one, but certainly a physical one,” said the BBC Radio Scotland commentator.

Bonner responded: “Yeah, I love to see strikers doing that type of work. He had to run all the way back, almost into his own half to make that challenge. Recognising there is a bit of danger, he wasn’t standing and watching. He just took responsibility to come back, took the ball off Olusanya and I think he tweaked his ankle just as he tried to win the ball.”

Idah’s stats for Celtic against St Mirren

It’s going to be interesting to see if Idah now gets a run of starts from Rodgers because you sense he hasn’t got going this season.

Idah was fantastic on-loan during the previous campaign and many were calling for his return. The fans got their wish!

But the Republic of Ireland star hasn’t found that spark to really showcase why Celtic paid big bucks for him and perhaps a run of starts will get him going.

Either way, WhoScored rated his performance against St Mirren at 7.25.
