Pat Bonner reacts to Celtic fans chanting ‘sack the board’ during defeat to Hearts

You have to say, the reaction from the Celtic fans during the defeat against Hearts on Saturday was something that has been bubbling up for a while.

It was only last week that the players were still unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership, only to suffer a deserved loss to Kilmarnock.

What has been most worrying about Celtic’s performances under Brendan Rodgers has been the lack of bite and speed in the team’s play.

Some point towards the Celtic board and why more money hasn’t been spent on proven stars to take the club forward.

But, when fans started to get restless yesterday and chants of ‘sack the board’ were ringing around Parkhed, Pat Bonner disagreed with it all, as he told BBC Radio Scotland (16/12/23).

The Bhoys legend stated that he ‘didn’t like to see’ the fans arguing amongst themselves, which sparked in the second half.

At 2-0 down, another poor showing from the team, and no reaction after the break, the fans were only going to react in one way. And you can’t blame them!

But Pat Bonner was also keen to mention that the team is still sitting top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Celtic fans chant ‘sack the board’

“I think somebody is having a go at the Celtic board,” said Bonner as the crowd started to get restless.

Then when the first rounds of ‘sack the board’ chants went around the ground: “They are still in a position (to win the league). It’s still too early.

“It has been a while since I have seen that reaction – we lost a lot of focus there around the game. I have got to say, considering Celtic are still top of the league – I don’t like to see the fans arguing amongst themselves.”

Celtic v Livingston

There is now going to be huge, huge pressure on the players against Livingston next Saturday.

You feel that the team have to get out of the traps from the get-go, or else, the players will feel pressure like never before.

Three games remain before the year is out – Livingston, away at Dundee and then Rangers.

Just win those matches, and whilst it doesn’t change much, it does add a feel-good factor back into the club because it is really needed right now.
