Red Star Belgrade sports director Mitar Mrkela has issued an urgent message to supporters ahead of Celtic’s Europa League visit.

The Bhoys begin their Europa League campaign with a trip to the Serbian capital on Wednesday 24 September.

It is a difficult fixture to begin with given the reputation the Delije have in terms of their atmosphere, and the fans have already been told to bring the noise.

Red Star Belgrade fans encouraged to sell out the Marakana

When a stadium is known as the ‘Marakana’, you know it is going to be noisy.

Just ask Liverpool from when they lost to Red Star back in 2018, and ahead of welcoming Brendan Rodgers and his squad, Mrkela has said he wants to see a sell-out.

“The fans are the key to winning the match against Celtic and I ask as many supporters as possible to attend the game and help us,” he said.

“We have a tough match with Celtic, which is a club with a rich tradition who are always a quality and demanding opponent.

“I am sure that we will also have a real spectacle at the Marakana. The support of the fans has always been crucial for Red Star and that is why I invite them to come to the stadium in as large a number as possible.

“Together we can create an atmosphere that will give our footballers a boost and help them achieve another great result.”

Red Star Belgrade face Eternal derby dilemma

Both teams are in action before their midweek meeting. Celtic face Partick Thistle for a place in the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup, however, Red Star have their biggest game of the season.

This weekend, they face Partizan Belgrade in the Eternal derby, which is the biggest rivalry in Serbia.

The two currently lead the way in the Serbian Super Liga, with Partizan ahead, having played one game more.

That leaves the team with a decision to make on whom they play this Saturday.
