Ryan Christie is unhappy after not being awarded Celtic penalty

Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie feels he should have been awarded a penalty by referee Kevin Clancy after an incident at Easter Road on Saturday, The Scottish Sun report.

Christie was brought down by opposition defender Lewis Stevenson, with the Hibs man making clear contact. However, officials decided not to award the penalty, much to the Scotland international’s frustration.

With Moritz Bauer also having a strong claim just minutes later, Christie feels that the Hoops should have had two chances to take the lead in a closely fought 1-1 draw.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “I’ve seen it back and I think it is a stonewall penalty.

“It is frustrating because, at that point, we were very much on top in the match. I think it is probably because I got a cross away that the referee didn’t give it.

“They seem to just try to play on, but, for me, it is a definite penalty. I think everyone can see that.

“I thought the later Bauer one was very similar.”

Not alone

Christie certainly isn’t the only one feeling that Celtic have been hard done by in the fixture. Pundit Michael Stewart thought similar.

Neil Lennon meanwhile also criticised the refereeing on the day, hitting out at Clancy for missing what he feels were two clear penalties (The Daily Record).

They were costly errors for the Hoops, with rivals Rangers thrashing Aberdeen later in the afternoon and closing the gap at the top of the table to one point.

Ultimately we should have found a way to win, but it’s understandable that Christie and Lennon have been left frustrated and unhappy with the standard of officiating.

Hopefully it’s not an issue next week away to Livingston.
