Sky Sports pundit urges Celtic to buy Jota now after dazzling display in Dundee

Sky Sports pundit James McFadden has urged Celtic to snap up Jota immediately after another smash-hit performance against Dundee.

The on-loan Portuguese winger is winning plenty of admirers in Scotland after a stunning start to his Celtic career. Heading into today, the Benfica-owned talent had 4 goals and 5 assists to his name in only 13 appearances. But after netting another and setting up 2 more, he’s now secured 12 direct goal contributions in 14 outings.

Celtic are believed to have an option to buy the player for just over £6m [Sky Sports]. However, neither Jota nor the club have been committal when asked about the situation as of yet.

But McFadden certainly was. He was speaking on Sky Sports Football after today’s game [07/11, 14:20], and it’s fair to say he has one clear message for the club on what to do with the youngster:

“He’s got so much quality on the ball, he can go either side. He doesn’t mind when he goes down the left hand side and just putting it into an area with his left-foot. He’ll cut inside, he’s got a trick, he’ll take people on.

“Obviously he gets 2 goals and an assist, and he just looks like a real good player for Celtic. He’s one that they have the option to buy him, and I’d be paying that money right now. Right now. I think he’s been excellent, I really do.

“When you look at his performances domestically, he transfers that into the European games. He’s been excellent in the European games. I know that against Betis and Leverkusen they never got the results they were looking for, but at times the performances were there and Jota was magnificent. He’s an exciting player.”

Permanent Celtic move for Jota looks inevitable should he want it

There’s absolutely no downside to buying the Portuguese talent whatsoever. If he was to be announced on a permanent deal tomorrow, Celtic fans would be absolutely elated regardless of the hefty fee.

That’s because the Celtic support now know what they would be getting. Paying over £6m would still be an absolutely brilliant move for the football club as we know it’ll be paid back and then some. In fact, should he shoot Celtic to the Premiership title this year, he’ll already have done so before we’ve even spent it!

Celtic have UCL cash up for grabs should they secure the league championship this season. It could easily be the case that they wait for that to be secured before committing to a move for the Benfica man.

Then again, can we really afford not to move for him? Even if we lost the league in Ange’s first season, Jota would be deemed essential to the rebuilding process. A key cog that needs to be brought in so that we can press ahead.

Chances are Celtic won’t be doing anything about this anytime soon. It’s not the club’s policy to go making early decisions on options to buy. Especially when it’s as much as £6m+ worth.

Don’t expect anything too quickly on this. The Hoops have always tended to do things their own way in the transfer market and seldom bow to external pressure. But make no mistake, a failure to sign up Jota on a permanent deal and there will be hell to pay from the supporters.
