Celtic’s Jonny Hayes might not start every game for the Hoops. However, when it comes to the big games, he is often selected by Neil Lennon.
That was the case in the 2-1 win over Lazio in Rome, and in the Betfred Cup Final. It was also the case when the Hoops returned to European action against Copenhagen.
With Greg Taylor injured and left-behind in Glasgow, Neil Lennon turned to Hayes for the left-back role.
Not for the first time, Hayes did well in the role he has adapted to since joining Celtic.
Did well in both areas of the pitch
He was solid in defence, and supported the team in attack when the chance arrived. The Hoops drew 1-1 in what was a decent result on the night.
However, Hayes’ display showed what the player is all about under Neil Lennon. He worked hard, and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in when it mattered.
A few more performances like the one against Copenhagen, and Hayes will have to be awarded a new contract by the club.
Contract decision must be made soon
His contract expires at the end of the season, but in some big games this season he has proved his worth.
Some Celtic fans on Twitter didn’t hold back when it came to Hayes’ performance. One fan who had been critical of the player recently described his performance as ‘rock solid’.
