Celtic might have reached the group stages of the Europa League following a 4-1 win over AIK. However, the positive result was marred by an injury suffered by Kristoffer Ajer in the first-half of the game.

As yet, we don’t know how severe the injury is. However, the fact that he had to be substituted means that he could well miss the Glasgow derby against Rangers on Sunday.

That would be a real blow to Celtic, and fans on social media were immediately concerned, as Ajer has been in excellent form for the Hoops this season.

One fan said that the injury was ‘terrible’. Another proclaimed that Ajer being out for the derby would be ‘catastrophic’.

Here are some of the best reactions from social media to Ajer’s untimely injury:

Celtic fans will be eagerly awaiting Neil Lennon’s comments after the game about the status of Ajer.

Should he miss the game, then perhaps Hatem Abd Elhamed could deputise, providing he is fit for the game. He did not feature against AIK.

Perhaps Moritz Bauer could make an unexpected debut. He only joined the Hoops on Wednesday, but if needs must he could make his first Celtic appearance at the home of the Hoops’ biggest rivals.

Anthony Ralston is also an option, he replaced Ajer at right-back against AIK. If Ajer misses the game, perhaps Celtic could play three at the back.

That would be a gamble for a trip to Ibrox, but it could catch Rangers by surprise and perhaps play into Celtic’s hands.

Nothing will be decided however until the status of Ajer’s injury is known. If there is any chance of getting Ajer for the derby, Celtic will be trying as hard as they can to ensure that Ajer is fit for the game.

The potential absence of Ajer has come at a bad time, but the Hoops may just have to deal with it.
