Hatem Abd Elhamed has only had one disappointment at Celtic since joining the club in the summer from Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
That is the 4-3 loss to Cluj in the Champions League qualifiers. The Hoops seemed set to go through to the play-off round after taking a 3-2 lead on the night.
However, the team buckled under pressure and ended up exiting Europe’s top club competition. Elhamed hasn’t held back in his view of the game though.
He believes that the Hoops should have defeated the Romanian champions.
“We are a much better team than them”
“The only disappointment was losing to Cluj in the Champions League. We are a much better team than them. We should have easily beaten them at home” he said, as reported by the Daily Record, when looking at his Hoops career so far.
“But I’m sure I’ll get another chance of Champions League football with Celtic.”
The majority of the Celtic support will most likely agree with Elhamed’s comments. The Hoops are a much better team than Cluj. They proved that in the first leg of the tie, when they comfortably held Cluj to a 1-1 draw.
Hoops have more than made up for defeat
Since the Cluj defeat the Hoops have proved that the loss was a blip, as they have won every game they have played since. Neil Lennon has also not repeated his mistake of playing Callum McGregor at left-back.
Celtic will of course have a chance for a revenge of sorts when the teams meet in the Europa League group stages. But it is hard to argue with Elhamed’s comments. That was a bad night for all concerned with Celtic. The players and the management.
The Hoops have put things right since then, but Celtic really should have defeated Cluj.
