Big players step up on big occasions for Celtic, and Callum McGregor has done that time and time again.

On Saturday evening, as Celtic were going to drop their first set of points in the Premiership under Martin O’Neill, the man with the armband did what he does best.

With seconds left on the clock, Callum McGregor rifled the ball into the top corner and helped Celtic beat St Mirren.

Understandably, the man in St Mirren’s dugout, Stephen Robinson, was left deflated, but even he couldn’t hide away from the beauty of McGregor’s goal.

Should Steve Clarke ask Celtic captain Callum McGregor to revoke his Scotland retirement for the 2026 World Cup?

Stephen Robinson praises Callum McGregor’s ‘wonderstrike’ for Celtic

Speaking to Sky Sports, Robinson shared how he felt that his team were ‘as good as Celtic’ on a cold night in Paisley.

But even Robinson couldn’t hide the fact that McGregor’s winner was ‘an absolute wondergoal.’

“Very difficult (to take),” said Robinson about St Mirren’s last-minute defeat to Celtic. “I thought our performance was terrific. The fine margins of football have gone against us again.

“Some we are in control of, and some we are not. I thought we were as good as Celtic tonight. We created a lot of chances. We should have taken them. We had three chances that we should have taken, and we got beaten by an absolute wondergoal by Callum.

“That’s the fine lines when you play against Celtic.”

Robinson on the League Cup final

Celtic beat Rangers in the League Cup semi-final to book their final ticket with St Mirren next month, and McGregor netted a stunning strike from distance then to break the Gers’ hearts.

You can bet your bottom dollar that the Celtic fans will be urging their skipper to shoot from distance any time he has a chance on December 14.

“We have shown we can compete in both games against Celtic,” said Robinson about what this means for the final against Celtic at Hampden. “I don’t think Shamal (George) had a whole lot to do.

“We were beaten by a wondergoal. The difference between the two teams was Callum’s goal. It was a fantastic strike.”
