The Celtic and St Johnstone weather situation as winter hits Scottish football

Scottish football suffered several postponements on Saturday afternoon after cold weather and snow impacted fixtures in the Premiership down into the lower leagues.

Livingston’s match at Ross County was the headline cancellation, leaving just two matches in the top flight going ahead.

Thankfully, Celtic’s match away to St Johnstone looks in a good position to get underway on Sunday at 12pm, albeit in cold afternoon conditions.

Temperatures could reach as low as -3 degrees Celsius overnight per the latest weather reports but the McDiarmid Park side have undersoil heating to guard against any frost, while there is no snow, or even rain, forecast ahead of kick-off. It should be a bright winter afternoon.

Fans however will be well warned to travel safely from across the country to Perth with an early kick-off leaving some supporters with potentially precarious morning journeys.

Celtic need to bounce back well vs St Johnstone

Celtic visit St Johnstone eight points clear at the top of the table and have the chance to extend that lead to 11 ahead of Rangers playing St Mirren at home later in the day.

Coming off of disappointing matches against Motherwell and Lazio, the Bhoys must kick off December in confident fashion.

The games come thick and fast over the next month and with 24 points up for grabs before the winter break, it is a critical time in the title race.

Defender Alistair Johnston has suggested motivation is high amongst the squad group this week. He has tipped his team to get off to a ‘hot’ start in Perth.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers is expecting a tough encounter against a defensively-minded Craig Levein outfit.

Thankfully, Celtic are not dealing with any fresh injuries coming out of the trip to Rome. However, the injured trio of Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada and Reo Hatate remain on the sidelines.

The fixture is being broadcast live on Sky Sports Football while BBC Radio Scotland will also be providing live audio commentary across their platforms.
