Celtic’s upcoming Europa League trip to Rennes will be their 16th away tie in the group stages. Looking back at Celtic’s previous away results in the group stages, a statistic shows that it could be a difficult night for the Hoops in France.
Of Celtic’s previous 15 away games in the group stages, the Hoops have only won once – last season’s 1-0 win over Rosenborg.
The Hoops have drawn eight of the away games, and lost six. Therefore, the odds of the Hoops winning in Rennes would seem to be quite low.
Drawn more than half of away games
However, as the Hoops have drawn more than half of their away games in the group stages, that may seem the most likely result.
Celtic would probably take a draw in their opening game of the group stages. A win though, would be exceptional. It would also be the first time Celtic have won their first away match in the group stages.
The win against Rosenborg last season was in Celtic’s last away game of the group stages. Therefore, the Hoops would be making a small bit of history with a win in Rennes.
Neil Lennon will be telling his side that they can win in Rennes. The Hoops have recovered from losing to Cluj, and have won every competitive match since then.
Toughest test of the season so far
Rennes will possibly be the toughest game Celtic have played so far this season. They do seem to be a cut above the likes of Cluj, and AIK.
Therefore, it will take a very good performance from the Hoops to get something out of the game. However, Rennes should feel the same about facing a Celtic team containing the likes of Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest.
Those players are good enough to cause Rennes all sorts of problems. If they are at their best, Celtic could well make it two wins from 16 away games in the Europa League group stages.
