Kasper Schmeichel has come in for plenty of criticism this season.

Schmeichel has looked a shadow of himself ever since the high-profile error against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final last year.

The 39-year-old has made several mistakes and 67 Hail Hail fans have previously stated on TalkingPoints how they would like to see an upgrade in that position.

There are still some bright moments from the Dane, including a great save in the win against Falkirk.

That ensured that Martin O’Neill had won six home league games in a row without conceding for the first time, and that Schmeichel remained in contention for a surprise award.

It may seem like Schmeichel has made endless mistakes this season. However, in the league, things are quite different.

Celtic have conceded 11 goals in the Scottish Premiership and the clean sheet against Falkirk was their 12th of the campaign.

That means the 39-year-old is now one behind Motherwell’s Calum Ward in the race for the Golden Glove, awarded to the ‘keeper with the most clean sheets this season.

He has some distance between himself and Jack Butland in the charts and will believe he can win the top prize at the end of the season.

Have we been too harsh on Kasper Schmeichel?

Keeping clean sheets in 50 per cent of your league games is an impressive feat for anyone, but does it mean that the harsh treatment towards the former Premier League winner cannot be justified?

Others would argue that most of his mistakes have come in the bigger games, especially in Europe.

Even in the win against Utrecht, Schmeichel should have saved Adrian Blake’s long-range effort after getting a fingertip to it.

Expectations and pressure are high at Celtic, that’s why players of this calibre are judged higher than others.
