Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi has been nominated for the UEFA Champions League goal of the week after his stunner against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.
Kyogo netted the opening goal in the 2-2 draw after combining superbly with Matt O’Riley. It was a fantastic team effort, thriving off of the energy in the stadium to cut open the Spanish defence.
Daizen Maeda was also involved in the build-up, but it was Kyogo and O’Riley’s combination that left everyone stunned. The Danish midfielder laid it on a plate for his Japanese teammate, who coolly prodded home.
Celtic’s Kyogo nominated alongside big stars
UEFA have included the strike alongside £45m [Sky Sports] Gabriel Jesus’ effort for Arsenal against Sevilla, Meschack Elia’s chip at home to Man City for Young Boys and Xavi Simon’s long-range missile for RB Leipzig facing Red Star Belgrade in their goal of week award.
Supporters vote for the winner and UEFA have now asked people to get involved. Already, many Celtic fans are showing support for our Japanese Bhoy, so there’s every chance he is handed the honour.
Kyogo is really starting to find his feet in the tournament after a frustrating 2022/23 campaign at the elite level. His goals against Lazio and Atletico have really demonstrated that he can be effective beyond the Scottish Premiership and domestic cups.
Tying him down to a long-term contract in the summer was a fantastic piece of business for the club that could pay off for years to come. He’s only going to get better with more exposure to big-time defences.
It would be fantastic to now see him do it away from home in the Champions League, with massive tests away to Atletico and Lazio on the horizon.
In other news, Brendan Rodgers comments point to Celtic’s big problem at Champions League level but it can be fixed.
