Paul Merson says Newcastle United’s 4-1 win over PSG in the Champions League is ‘up there with the European nights at Celtic Park’.
Whilst Eddie Howe, a former managerial target of the Bhoys, and his players smashed Kylian Mbappe’s PSG last night, it was a gut-wrenching defeat for those at Celtic.
Forget the teams for a minute. The quality on display or the money spent. One thing that can’t be argued is that venues like Celtic Park and St James’ Park are truly special on European nights.
They are one of the best across the globe and are renowned by some of the best players in the world for their spine-tingling atmospheres.
Celtic have still managed to secure regular Champions League nights over the years, whereas Newcastle are embarking on their first adventure against the elite in 20 years.
And after securing a point in Milan last time out, they smashed PSG yesterday, with Merson issuing the following response on Twitter, with a special mention to Celtic.

Newcastle beat PSG
“What a result Newcastle,” said Merson. “The atmosphere up there with European nights at Celtic Park and Anfield. Amazing.”
Celtic still in with a chance
The reality is that it’s two defeats from two. And in both games, the team has shot themselves in the foot.
There is still a chance to make something of this group, but something has to be done ASAP.
It’s Atletico Madrid up next on home soil. If it’s more dropped points, then fans will be staring at the inevitable again.
