Celtic fans have urged the club to enter the transfer market and bring in a quality defender to bolster Neil Lennon’s options this season, after a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Kilmarnock.

The reigning Scottish Premiership champions did take the lead at Rugby Park thanks to a Ryan Christie free-kick.

However, poor defending at the other end from Christopher Jullien led to a penalty which was subsequently converted by Chris Burke to earn the home side a point.

Jullien struggled on the artificial surface up against Nicke Kimbamba for much of the afternoon, raising more questions about how he deals with physicality following last season’s performances against Lyndon Dykes.

The Frenchman has been a successful Celtic signing but even the best players need competition within the squad to stay fresh and sharp.

That’s something not available to either Jullien or Kristoffer Ajer right now.

Nir Bitton can slot in but is a midfielder, while Hatem Abd Elhamed plays a utility role between centre-half and right-back.

Only youngster Stephen Welsh is a natural choice in the position elsewhere in the squad.

After Jozo Simunovic’s exit, it is blatantly obvious that we need another quality central defender to arrive at the club.

With qualifiers starting later this month and a difficult schedule on the horizon, the club really don’t have much time to do it either, if we want to be fully prepared for the challenges ahead.

Rather than single anyone out for today’s poor result, we should really be looking at what the club can do over the coming weeks to best equip Neil Lennon.
