Charlie Mulgrew has been an unlikely main character in the Scottish title race.

Since the very beginning of the season, the ex-Celtic vice-captain has maintained his stance that he expects Hearts to fall off in their bid for an unlikely Scottish title.

Even in the heat of their title push, Mulgrew has maintained his stance. Don’t back down, double down, et cetera…

With Celtic seconds away from being dealt a sucker punch in the race, they were given the golden opportunity from the spot which was taken by Kelechi Iheanacho.

Cue bedlam in the Mulgrew household when Iheanacho buries it.

Speaking on Premier Sports back in February, after an Edinburgh Derby win for the Jambos, Mulgrew said: “They showed some great resilience tonight, Hearts, and it was one where they had to step up today.

“I still think they’ll fall away. I’m just basing it on my feeling. My gut feeling is they won’t sustain this over a season. That’s my feeling.

“Now I said they would be eight points behind in March, and they would be nowhere near it, because that was my feeling.

“I had no evidence to suggest that Hearts could go, in my lifetime, and put a title challenge in place. Now, are they putting a title challenge in place? Yes, there’s a long way to go when that split comes.”

His comments drew a furious reaction from the Tynecastle support, with many accusing him of blindly towing the Celtic line.

At the time, it seemed a long shot for the Hoops to win the title, regardless of the presence of Martin O’Neill.

BE HONEST: Do you think Celtic’s late penalty should’ve been given…? 👀

Celtic’s dramatic run-in so far

Hearts’ results since the split have forced Celtic to be perfect in order to stay alive in the title race. Incredibly, they have finally found the consistency to do so.

Falkirk was the first task ticked off. Easter Road was next, and despite a red card for Hibs’ Jamie McGrath, Celtic needed saved by Iheanacho in a narrow win.

In the Glasgow Derby, Rangers took the lead, but Celtic dug in again. It was Daizen Maeda who made the difference that time.

Then at Fir Park, it was the most dramatic one yet. The media may try to distract from Celtic’s win, but again, Iheanacho was the saviour.
