10 Celtic players from over the years that you completely forgot about

Celtic have had so many talented players to walk through the doors at Parkhead.

Legends like Paul McStay and Henrik Larsson have graced the hallowed turf and played a huge part in Celtic history.

For every player that sticks in your head, there are the ones that make you think: ‘did they really play for Celtic?’

So, to jog your memory, here are 10 players to have worn the green and white that you’ve definitely forgotten about.

10) Oliver Abildgaard

Signed on loan from Rubin Kazan on September 1, 2022, Oliver Abildgaard was dubbed to be a real coup and someone who could take the Hoops midfield to the next level.

That wasn’t to be the case and the Danish midfielder made six league appearances before having his loan spell cut short by Kazan in January 2023 and he was moved on to Hellas Verona in Italy.

For all the good Ange Postecoglou did during his tenure, the signing of Abildgaard can be considered as an anomaly.

9) Kundai Benyu

Kundai Benyu joined the Bhoys from Ipswich Town as a youngster in 2017 shortly after signing his professional contract with the Tractor Boys.

Tipped to be one for the future, Benyu made his competitive debut in a Champions League qualifier against Linfield and it’s about as good as it got as he only played three more times before heading off into the wilderness.

8) Marvin Compper

Despite featuring for an RB Leipzig side climbing up the German footballing pyramid, Marvin Compper is a truly forgettable name at Celtic.

The Bhoys parted with £1m to bring Compper to Glasgow in December 2017 but failed to make a single league appearance.

In fact, the defender played a grand total of 83 minutes in one appearance for Celtic before returning to Germany.

7) Tyler Blackett

Once a product of the Manchester United academy, Tyler Blackett was signed on loan to give him some solid first team experience ahead of breaking into the United squad.

Eight appearances is all he could manage and as proved by him being on this list, his time at Celtic was forgettable.

6) Diego Laxalt

Diego Laxalt represents a truly horrible period in recent Celtic history where the side looked disjointed, made questionable recruitment decisions and looked a yard off the pace of their Glasgow derby neighbours Rangers.

Despite Laxalt’s pedigree in European football, he was way off the mark in Glasgow and not a happy memory.

5) Stefan Scepovic

After establishing himself as a prolific goalscorer for Sporting Gijon in Spain, Stefan Scepovic signed for just over £2m in September 2014.

Scepovic had initially turned down a move to Celtic the day before but reversed his decision and signed on the dotted line.

He scored five goals for the Bhoys but given the amount of strikers the club has had over the years, he’s one that doesn’t initially come to mind.

4) Cha Du Ri

Sadly, the most memorable moment of Cha Du Ri’s Celtic career was his chant of ‘Don’t you wish your right back was Cha Du Ri’.

He played over 40 games for the Hoops and was a very versatile player but was by no means a standout.

After leaving to join Fortuna Dusseldorf, the defender slammed the standard of Scottish football in a Daily Record interview, saying it was “dismal”.

3) Freddie Ljungberg

It’s hard to imagine that a former Arsenal invincible could be branded as a forgotten player but when it comes to Freddie Ljungberg, his time at Celtic is a distant memory.

Ljungberg did join towards the end of his career but after impressing during a trial following his return from America, the wide man was a shadow of himself.

After making his debut against Berwick Rangers, Ljungberg only played seven more times before he left and moved to China.

2) Aleksandar Tonev

Bulgarian Aleksandar Tonev endured an ill-fated loan spell that ended badly for the Bhoys.

Tonev played 13 times in total after joining from Aston Villa on loan with an option to buy in 2014.

He was handed a seven-match ban for “using abusive language of a racist nature” after being accused of racially abusing Aberdeen’s Shay Logan. Celtic never appealed the red card and the permanent option was never taken up.

1) Andrew Gutman

Signed by Celtic in January 2019, Andrew Gutman was tipped for big things but the hype was about as good as it got.

Gutman was loaned back to MLS clubs multiple times and then completed a permanent transfer to Atlanta United in 2021.

His only appearance for Celtic came in a reserves fixture as a trialist in a 4-3 loss against Arbroath.
