James Forrest will aim to back up his PFA Player of the Year award with another strong showing in Sunday’s derby. The 27 year-old has been sublime for Celtic this season – netting 17 goals. He needs just one more strike this season to break his record for goals in a season. So will it come on Sunday, at the home of our fiercest rivals?
History tells us no. If there’s one criticism of Forrest it is that he can sometimes become a passenger in tough away games. The little winger has never scored at Ibrox. In fact, he’s managed just two in 19 appearances in total against Rangers. Those goals have come in our last four meetings with the Gers though, and there’s a feeling that Forrest may just be clearing his throat for another special moment.
The speedster has shown he’s a man for the big occasion this season. Goals in cups, derbies and internationals have propelled him to the status of being one of Celtic’s go-to guys when they need a goal.
Show no fear
Forrest will likely play directly against Jon Flanagan who has started each of Rangers’ last five matches. He can have enormous joy if he sticks to what he’s good at – running directly at players and causing havoc.
Flanagan has been solid enough in recent weeks but there’s a reason he’s been second-choice for the majority of the season.
The full-back struggles to deal with pace and someone who will run him all day. Forrest can do that for fun. Let’s just hope the wee winger is having one of his better derby days come Sunday.
