British rock legend Rod Stewart has become the latest person to get involved in the debate over a rejected guard of honour before this Sunday’s Glasgow derby.
Earlier in the week, Rangers revealed that they would not pay respect to the champions by clapping them on to the pitch. Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor responded by saying that the Hoops didn’t need vindication from their rivals.

The matter may be closed but that hasn’t stopped Celtic fan Stewart from adding his tuppence worth.
“If the shoe was on the other foot I’d love Celtic to give a guard of honour to Rangers,” he said on talkSPORT (Friday 10th May, 11am). “I find it so childish and it’s not a good example for the kids.
“I would be so proud if Celtic give Rangers a guard of honour if they win the title next year.”

Drama about nothing
It really does seem a bit daft that such a minuscule event could create such a stir. Rangers were never going to be seen to be applauding their rivals securing another title. Even if the club had approved it, then several players would undoubtedly have resisted. The home support would’ve booed the event and the whole thing would’ve been a bit messy.
Respect and appreciation has its place in sport but that’s not minutes before a Rangers-Celtic clash. All sportsmanship goes out the window on derby day in Glasgow and fans, players and coaches become focussed on one thing: winning.

As McGregor correctly pointed out, Celtic don’t need any pats on the back from their rivals. Their joy will come from lifting trophies and celebrating with their own fans.
The pointless debate about a guard of honour will be forgotten the minute the clock hits midday on Sunday. Nothing else will seem to matter anymore.
