Celtic Park has been a quiet place over the past few months. Just four of Neil Lennon’s 12 matches in charge have been at home. The stadium stirred when the Hoops won the derby in late March, but other than that it’s been a very reserved place.
That feeling will only grow if Lennon is given the job permanently. The Northern Irishman’s hopes amongst the fanbase were dashed with Sunday’s demoralising derby defeat. The 2-0 loss to Rangers may have meant little in the title race but it did have a profound effect on Lennon’s status among the support.
They don’t want the Northern Irishman re-installed. Instead they want a new boss, possibly a bigger name, with fresh ideas.
What if Lennon gets the job?
If the Celtic board decide to take the cheap option and hand the man from Lurgan the gig then the effect will be felt around the club. The appointment will be greeted with a reserved sigh from some quarters and anger from others. Celtic Park won’t be needed for an unveiling as it was with Brendan Rodgers three years ago. A small chunk of the Celtic Way will suffice.

Season tickets would be unlikely to take a hit at this stage but weekly attendances would suffer. Celtic Park has seen empty seats on many occasions this season and that would only increase if Lennon was in charge permanently.
The football would start and we’d be unable to do anything other than get behind the team. Ten-in-a-row would require a strong collective and any disharmony wouldn’t be helpful. The Celtic support would hum and haw about the latest signings, league fixtures and European qualifiers.
It would all continue in the same fashion as usual, but there would be a feeling of discontentment among supporters. A feeling that the club had taken a backwards step.
