You’ve got to feel for Mikey Johnston. The 20-year-old has burst on to the scene for Celtic this season. He’s had a real breakthrough year in the Hoops, netting three goals in 13 league appearances. Yet he’s found himself on the end of real criticism from sections of the Celtic support who should know better.
It’s easy to forget that the winger hadn’t scored a goal for Celtic before December. His emphatic strike in a win over Motherwell was backed up by a brace against Dundee three days later.
Johnston was seen as the next big thing at the club. Now he’s been hung out to dry.

An unfriendly environment
Youngsters must be tested at a good level against good players, and in pressure situations. However, Celtic’s decision to start Johnston in unfamiliar roles in our two visits to Ibrox this year haven’t done the kid any favours.

In December he started as a lone striker in the most hostile of away grounds. Johnston started just two matches between then and last week, when he was once again thrust into the Govan spotlight – this time as a deep-lying right winger.

Perfect chance
The winger thrives best when he’s trusted with an attacking role on the flanks. He is never happier than when he’s terrorising opposition full-backs with his trickery and pace.
Celtic have a very talented young player on their hands. It’s about time that they start utilising him properly, rather than making him a scapegoat.
