Andoni Iraola claim shot down after Celtic’s brutal sacking of Wilfried Nancy

Surprise, surprise. Celtic are back to winning ways as soon as Wilfried Nancy is out of the door.

It’s a 33-day stint Celtic are hoping doesn’t result in the title heading elsewhere because, as of this moment, Martin O’Neill has a lot to do to secure the Premiership title.

There will be some who think that Celtic’s sacking of Nancy was harsh because, in eight games, you can only do so much.

But when Tony Cascarino compared Nancy’s time in Glasgow to how Andoni Iraola started life at Bournemouth, it was quickly and rightfully shot down.

How much responsibility should the players take for Nancy’s tenure, given how quickly they seem to have turned it around with Dundee win?

Andoni Iraola comparison at Bournemouth after Celtic sack Wilfried Nancy

To put it in simple terms, there is no other club in the world that compares to Celtic, and the immense pressure that comes with wearing the famous green and white colours.

But given that Nancy lost six of his eight matches in charge, Cascarino proceeded to compare the situation to when Iraola took the Bournemouth job in 2023, and he failed to win in his first nine league matches.

The former striker added on talkSPORT that the English club ‘stayed with him’, and he has since been a huge success on the South Coast.

However, Celtic fan Shebahn Aherne dismissed that comparison and explained how the Cherries aren’t expected to win the league title.

But life at Parkhead, and Scottish football as a whole, has ‘its own entity’, and whether it’s ‘entitled’ or not, the only thing that is expected at Celtic is to win the league again, and again.

So, whether it was a brutal, sad or deserved ending for Nancy. He can have no complaints because this is the life of trying to be successful at a club like Celtic.

Tony Cascarino: “I felt a bit for him. You have lost games, and you have lost them quickly. Losing to teams like Motherwell and St Mirren in the cup final. You pay a price.

“But it still feels like such a short period of time. What was it like 30-odd days? That always has to be upstairs. That’s where it goes.

“Remember, Bournemouth, was it last year at the start of the season, Andoni Iraola, he started terribly. They stayed with him.”

Shebahn Aherne: “The only thing is, Cas. I think Scottish football in itself is its own entity. It’s not like Andoni Iraola was expected to win the league when he came in.

“Whereas when you take the job at Celtic, the job is to win the league. That would some people say, is entitled and a bit too high on expectation.

“You have got to give credit to Hearts. Now Rangers are ahead of us, and they were the laughing stock for the first half of the season, so he had to go.

“But I don’t think he was the right guy appointed.”
