Ange Postecoglou reflected on the contributions of Celtic captain Callum McGregor this evening after he made his 400th appearance for the club in a 2-0 win over Dundee United.
McGregor made his debut for the Bhoys all the way back in 2014 against KR Reykjavik. Four hundred matches later, he has become a living legend, winning a barrel load of trophies and producing consistently stellar performances.
After the match, Postecoglou was keen to stress how important he is for Celtic.
Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland [18:12], the Bhoys boss said: “I just said to the lads in there, they’ve got to appreciate they’re sharing a dressing room with a real special individual. He’ll obviously go down as a legend of this football club.
“The biggest compliment I can pay him, and what I said to the boys was, he plays every game as if it’s his debut. As if he’s got everything to prove. He scraps for everything, is involved in everything, even though he’s done it all in the game here in Scotland. It’s a credit to him and his family. We’re all privileged to share a dressing room with him.
“Every day he comes into training looking like the rookie, like a first year player and he plays the game that way. I know there’s more to come from him.
“The players see it themselves. They live and breathe it. They’re amongst it every day, mainly by actions but in his words too. I still don’t know what our dressing room at Lennoxtown looks like, I don’t go in there, because that’s his domain. I’m sure every one of those players realises they’re led by a special individual.”
This really is praise of the most glowing kind. Postecoglou rarely speaks so proudly of his players, even when complimenting them. McGregor has made a huge impression on the Australian.
As he has Celtic, of course. He’s been an incredible captain of the club and it still feels like there is so much ahead for him in his career. The amount of trophies he could win here is eye-watering.
