Aberdeen defender taking inspiration from Celtic after Sunday lesson

Aberdeen defender Hayden Coulson wants to do to Scottish Premiership opposition what Celtic managed to do against his side on Sunday.

Ange Postecoglou’s Bhoys won 2-0 on the afternoon and dominated large periods of the game before and after the interval.

Celtic had 69% of possession throughout the 90 minutes, creating the kind of chances that could have resulted in a much bigger margin of victory.

It was left-back Coulson’s first experience of Scottish league action after making a move from Middlesbrough and he’s hoping that the Dons can put the Celtic gameplan into action against other teams.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun [02/08 print edition, page 52], he said: “You can’t start like that at a place like Celtic Park. We grew into the game and had a couple of chances, but it just wasn’t our day.

“You could definitely see that teams could go there and be 3-0 or 4-0 down inside 15 minutes. But we showed in spells that we can progress in the season.

“We did well, especially on the counter-attack, although I don’t think we’ll play like that against most teams. Celtic will have the majority of the ball, but for the rest of the season, we’d like to play and do what they did to us.”

Jim Goodwin will be frustrated with aspects of his team’s performance at the weekend but it’s true we will probably be the best side they face all season.

The 15-minute spell at the end of the first half will be what they’re trying to take from their display, when they looked sharp and even dangerous in our half.

The problem for other teams in Scotland is that Celtic’s weekend display wasn’t even close to the team’s full capabilities. In fact, Postecoglou sounded a little frustrated in his post-match interviews.

There were periods of intense pressure, some lovely football and excellent work ethic, but once we start stringing that together in a complete 90-minute performance again, we could be blowing away teams in the manner Coulson alludes to.
