Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has provided another promising update on the return of fans to Scottish football.

The Dons chief has stated that discussions held with SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster has led to both being hopeful that Pittodrie can host test events in each of their next two home matches.

This also comes after Ross County chairman Roy McGregor told the BBC over the weekend that he is also expecting a call tomorrow to confirm whether his club can have fans at their game against Celtic on Saturday.

Cormack has still to receive the green light from the Scottish Government on his proposals, but he appeared optimistic as he opened up on potentially bringing his supporters back.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Cormack said: “I wanted to give you an update on test events and limited crowds. I just spoke to Neil Doncaster at the SPFL and we’re hopeful of getting the green light on Monday to host two test events. Next Saturday against Kilmarnock with 300 fans and the following Saturday against Motherwell with 750 fans.

“I mentioned a couple of months ago that we were hopeful of getting limited crowds back in September. It’s September 5 just now and hopefully with success of these events we’ll be able to rapidly move forward and get all of our season ticket holders in.

“A big thank you to all the clubs, the SPFL and the SFA for all the hard work over the last couple of months to get us to where we are today.”

More than a tinge of optimism as Celtic await lifting of Glasgow restrictions

So Aberdeen have now followed Ross County in putting forward their own plans to get some supporters back. It remains to be seen what the maximum number of spectators will be at venues between now and the end of the season.

However, this is another boost for the potential return of supporters. It comes after a successful trial event at Murrayfield over a week ago in which Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors successfuly played in front of a limited number of fans.

As for Celtic, it appears that there’s only thing stopping us from firing more proposals to the government – the current restrictions on Glasgow City Council.

Due to an influx of Covid cases, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has put a ban on visiting other households. This, unsurprisingly, has led to a ban on people entering football stadiums too (Daily Mail).

Celtic launched an attempt to get supporters in for their previous Premiership match against Motherwell before the international break, only to see it rejected by government (BBC).

But with more clubs looking to reintroduce supporters back to their club, Celtic will be eagerly awaiting the lifting of restrictions in order to finally get our own fans back. All eyes will now be on whether County and Aberdeen’s proposals are accepted.

In other news, an exciting Premier League talent linked with Celtic is reportedly close to making his final decision.
