Adam Matthews says time at Celtic was best of his career

Former Celtic defender Adam Matthews has discussed his time in Glasgow, believing it was the best part of his career to date, speaking to London News Online.

Matthews left the club for Sunderland in 2015 for a £2m fee (BBC), with manager Ronny Deila at the time telling reproters that the defender “wanted to try something else.”

However, it now seems there’s a bit of regret with his career path, with the player suggesting he was sad to leave.

The right-back currently plays for English Championship side Charlton Athletic, who are currently pushing for a play-off spot in the second-tier this season.

As quoted by London News Online, Matthews said: “It was a great honour to sign for Celtic. It was unexpected, it came out of the blue.

“They are a huge, huge club. People say the league is not great and blah, blah, blah – but any football game is tough.

“I loved every minute of it – playing in the Champions League, Europa League and the Old Firm matches. It was definitely the best moments of my career. I was sad to leave.”

Stalled career post-Celtic

Admitting to London News Online that it was a “tough summer” after leaving League One side Sunderland, Matthews career looked to have gone off the rails a bit following his exit from Celtic.

Matthews was once a reliable performer for the Hoops, making 150 appearances and winning six trophies.

He struggled to make an initial breakthrough at the Stadium of Light then was part of the team that went into free-fall and landed in League One.

Going from Champions League football to the English third-tier can’t have been easy for the player, so it’s no wonder he looks back fondly on his time in Glasgow.

He also dropped out of the Welsh national team, with the majority of his 14 caps coming while he was at Celtic.

Now at Charlton though he has another chance at making a Championship impact, making his first start for the club prior to the recent international break.

He’ll now be hoping he can find the form of his career glory days and use his experience to help the Addicks continue their fine start to the season.
