Former Celtic defender and BT Sport pundit Adam Virgo has torn into Shane Duffy for his Ibrox display as he claimed that Notts Forest could sign him next season.
Duffy came on for the final 25 minutes with the score at 0-0 and Celtic down to 10 men. However, just minutes after coming on, Rangers took the lead and would go on to win the game.
In terms of the on-loan Brighton man’s contribution, it wasn’t impressive. Shane was booked for hauling down Ryan Kent before a shocking moment in which he passed the ball straight to the Rangers attacker that should’ve led to goal number two.
And Virgo has clearly seen enough of Duffy at Parkhead. He believes he’s had his chances and that Duffy was lucky Ibrox wasn’t full to capacity at the weekend.
As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Virgo said: “I dread to think what Shane would have been like with a full crowd there. I think it would have been ten times worse for him. He looked a bag of nerves coming on against Rangers. Signings like this can happen, like myself.
“Unfortunately for Shane he’s made too many mistakes which have led to goals. Neil’s going to be very brave to stick with him. I don’t think Shane can say he has not been given chances. I don’t see Shane going back to Brighton because he won’t get into the side. Other clubs will take him in the Championship. I guarantee Chris Hughton, who had him at Brighton, would snap him up at Nottingham Forest.
“As much as I know Lenny — and he’s a really loyal guy — he might have to look Shane in the eye and say it’s as much as he can do, unless he can’t bring anyone else in and he’s got no other choice.”
Duffy has had more than enough chances at Celtic
I’ve personally tried to give Duffy all the chances in the world to hit the refresh button. He’s been given a bunch of first-team appearances by Neil Lennon along with several stints on the bench to refresh his state of mind.
How many fresh starts does Duffy need before he’s going to make himself a success at Parkhead? He’s played 18 times for the Hoops and you’ll do well to find three or four games in which he’s been convincing.
It’s difficult to see Lennon continuing to stick by him. Not considering the fact that Celtic can’t make any errors in the title-race now. The Hoops have to win all remaining 19 games and hope rival sides do us a couple of favours against Rangers.
There’s little to no chance that Neil plays a centre-back he doesn’t feel he can rely on. And make no mistake, there’s no way Lennon should think that Duffy can turn this around anymore.
Even with Christopher Jullien and Nir Bitton missing for Hibs next week, Lennon should go with Stephen Welsh. It’s time to give the youth star a chance at Parkhead and stop sticking with the Irish centre-back.
It’s time to admit now that the whole Duffy deal has been a massive flop and pretty much sums up our season. He’ll land on his feet elsewhere, but it won’t be at Celtic Park.
