Celtic were in imperious form against Aberdeen last weekend as the Bhoys comfortably secured their passage to the Premier Sports Cup final.

Kyogo Furuhashi, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Nicolas Kuhn were among the scorers, but Daizen Maeda was the star of the show after his hat-trick against the Dons.

While the Japan international proved to be a catalyst at the national stadium, he and his teammates will be relishing the opportunity to take on Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup final next month.

For now, the Bhoys turn their attention to their Champions League league phase tie against RB Leipzig at Parkhead, with the onus on Brendan Rodgers and company to deliver another special night under the lights in Europe.

Before that becomes the main talking point, Aiden McGeady has pointed out who he thought stood out at Hampden more than anyone else.

Aiden McGeady on Daizen Maeda’s performance vs Aberdeen

Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast, McGeady elaborated on Maeda’s excellent display against Aberdeen, where he produced a return of three goals and an assist for Furuhashi to help pile on the agony.

He stated: “Absolutely electric the full game yesterday. He comes in for a lot of stick based on his final ball and end product.

“He plays yesterday and he caused Nicky Devlin so many problems, three goals and an assist at Hampden. A fantastic performance, so he would be my player of the weekend if that’s what you want to say.”

Ross McCormack also chimed in, saying in humorous fashion: “Aiden’s actually took my (player of the week) off me, so I’m on the spot; I’m changing now!”

Daizen Maeda’s incredible start to the season for Celtic

Following his trio of strikes against Aberdeen, Maeda is now on nine goals and three assists in 14 appearances this campaign.

Operating primarily off the left-hand side, his ability to ghost in at the back post alongside possessing a unique work rate makes him the definition of a nightmare for opposition defences to play against.

Incredibly, he is now only one goal off his tally for the entirety of last campaign, and there will be real excitement about the potential numbers Maeda can post if he stays on a goalscoring trajectory.

Either way, his main focus will be carrying on his brilliant run of form against RB Leipzig tomorrow, where Celtic could take a leap in the right direction regarding their Champions League progression hopes.
