Aiden McGeady’s memories of his famous ‘unlucky Rangers’ clip have him thinking that Celtic can still win the league.

In a high-pressure season back in 2007-08, Gordon Strachan’s Celts gave themselves a mountain to climb in the title race, seven points behind Rangers after a derby defeat in March.

But they turned it around in extremely dramatic fashion, winning the title in a run-in which coincided with the tragic passing of Tommy Burns.

Talk of a potential quadruple for the Ibrox side was replaced by the achievement of a third consecutive league title for Celtic, as McGeady so famously boasted.

How many points will we pick up?

Aiden McGeady says he ‘certainly remembers’ famous Celtic title race clip

Comparing that season to the current campaign under Martin O’Neill, McGeady said on the Record Celtic Podcast: “Listen, we’ve been saying this for a long time.

“I think the game against Dundee United was a turning point, in terms of: I don’t think Celtic can continue doing it, playing poorly and winning games.

“But again, it shows, ‘what do I know?’ Because against St Mirren at home [last] Saturday, it was the same, but we managed to win 1-0.

“If that can continue and they can keep managing to grind out those 1-0s, 2-1s for the remainder of the season, then yeah, Celtic can win it.”

Reminded of the famous clip, and whether he remembers it. he said: “Oh yeah, I certainly do. I’ve seen it a few times, yeah…

“Yeah, it was the most satisfying title win [of my career]. And then that goes back to Callum McGregor, he might never win a title in these circumstances again, and hasn’t done before.

“So again, it could be emotionally charged. It might be the most satisfying if Celtic do manage to do it.”

In circumstances unique to that season, both of the final derbies of the season were played at Celtic Park, due to the New Year fixture being postponed after the shocking death of Phil O’Donnell.

Celtic won them both, with the first being decided by that iconic last-minute header from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

In the end, Rangers were left without either of the two trophies they were so desperately chasing, losing the UEFA Cup Final to Zenit St Petersburg.
