Radio host Alan Brazil does not think Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic deserved a red card and suspension for his high tackle on a St Gallen opponent earlier this month, writing in his Sunday Post column.

As STV have reported, Simunovic will be missing from Celtic’s first two Scottish Premiership encounters of the season after the Swiss FA referred the incident to the Scottish FA.

The Croatian defender could have no real arguments about receiving his marching orders.

It was a needless and potentially damaging challenge at head height.

However, Alan Brazil feels the concept of a red card in a friendly is absurd in and of itself.

As quoted by The Sunday Post, he said: “It was daft. His foot was ridiculously high. It was dangerous.

In a competitive game, I could see the argument for sending him off. But in a friendly? Come on!”

Later claiming that the referee’s decision to consult VAR and subsequently contribute to a two-match suspension was “overkill”, Brazil is clearly not happy with the officials in Switzerland or Scotland.

Will Celtic miss Jozo?

There are no real fitness or injury concerns in central defence right now. As a result, Celtic look pretty covered for the opening day of the season against St Johnstone.

Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer should be more than capable of providing the defensive stability required. Tommy Wright’s side are often not the most ambitious side when it comes to attacking the Hoops in any case.

The encounter away to Motherwell could provide more of a challenge. That one is sandwiched between a potential play-off to get into the UEFA Champions League. Having three quality centre-backs available when the action comes thick and fast would have been useful.

Most of all though, it could be bad news for Simunovic, giving his teammates a chance to form a potential partnership. If Ajer and Jullien look like a smart pairing then he could find it difficult to win his way back into the team.
