Albian Ajeti derby absence still a mystery; trained with Celtic on Friday, no minutes under Kennedy

The absence of Albian Ajeti in today’s Celtic match squad certainly raised a few eyebrows.

The Swiss striker has hardly set the world alight since signing for £5m from West Ham United last summer [Sky Sports], but has at least been present in most matchday squads when free from injury.

Not so this weekend apparently. He didn’t even make it to the bench today, nevermind getting any action on the pitch.

Unless the forward picked up an injury yesterday, he should have been available to John Kennedy today.

The Swiss striker was spotted taking part in sprinting drills at Lennoxtown on Friday, in a video posted to the official Celtic Twitter account.

Kennedy didn’t give any indication in his press conference after the training session that Ajeti was injured.

The interim boss also wasn’t asked about the issue today by BBC Scotland or Sky Sports. He didn’t offer any Ajeti information voluntarily.

It’s an intriguing situation, especially when you consider that Ajeti hasn’t played at all since Neil Lennon left the club.

Ajeti’s last appearance was during the first 1-0 win over Aberdeen in February. Since then he’s been an unused substitute in the second February win over Aberdeen and again against Dundee United two weeks ago.

Unless there is an injury story behind today’s absence, it appears he’s not doing enough for Kennedy in training to justify inclusion.

That’s a worry as we approach a summer that could well see the exit of our star striker.

The entire trio of Leigh Griffiths, Patryk Klimala and Ajeti aren’t particularly inspiring confidence right now.

Hopefully, we hear more on the status of Ajeti over the coming days.

In other news, Celtic transfer target Josh Doig’s inspiration is Kieran Tierney.
