Albian Ajeti injury update ahead of Celtic vs Rangers derby

Celtic striker Albian Ajeti has a ‘reasonable chance’ of making Neil Lennon’s match squad for the upcoming derby against Rangers, the manager has told The Herald this weekend.

Ajeti picked up a muscle injury when scoring against Hibernian last Sunday and missed the mid-week test against Sarajevo, as well as today’s match away to St Johnstone.

However, he shouldn’t be out for too long, and Lennon reckons he could even play against Steven Gerrard’s outfit.

The Bhoys boss told The Herald: “He has a reasonable chance of making the squad.

“Obviously, he won’t be away with Switzerland, and he will be working round the clock with the physios over the next couple of weeks.”

It seems evident to me that Odsonne Edouard needs an out-and-out striker alongside him, such as Leigh Griffiths or Ajeti, to truly see the best of the Frenchman.

Some of the responsibility for the 22-year-old’s poor recent performances must fall on the player but, equally, he has looked isolated in Lennon’s formation of late when supported by Ryan Christie or Mohamed Elyounoussi.

If Ajeti makes the derby, it’ll be a massive boost for the Bhoys. Having an array of options to choose from will keep the Ibrox side guessing.

The good news for Celtic is that two more strikers have staked a claim to play in the fixture today, as both Leigh Griffiths and Patryk Klimala came in from the fringes to score in the Scottish Premiership.

I have increasing confidence we have the firepower to make a big step forward in the title race.

In other news, Celtic fans loved Klimala’s determination to score this afternoon.
