Atletico Madrid reportedly looking at former Celtic star Moussa Dembele

Celtic could be eyeing up a windfall if Atletico Madrid make a proposal to lure Moussa Dembele from Lyon.

Reported by French newspaper L’Equipe, cited via Football Scotland, Dembele is a big target for the La Liga giants. A deal of around €50million (£43m) has been speculated upon by L’Equipe.

Dembele has had a stunning debut season in France. Since leaving Parkhead for Lyon in a deal worth near £20m, the former Fulham man has smashed home 15 goals in all competitions. He has 13 in 29 league matches, and has clearly impressed suitors around Europe.

Football Scotland believes that Celtic have a 10% sell-on fee for Dembele. Therefore, if a bid does reach as much as €50m, Celtic would rake in a cool €5m.

Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann has been linked with a move to Barcelona this summer. Should that move happen, Diego Simeone has earmarked Dembele as the perfect replacement.

A big-money move would be huge for Celtic

Should Dembele leave Lyon this summer, Celtic would rake in a fine amount of money. If it’s anywhere near €5m, that would be a fine sum to add to the transfer budget for the Hoops at the end of the season.

We’re reaching the most important summer of the race to 10-in-a-row. Celtic are needing to tweak several areas of the squad, and any new manager will need to be backed substantially. A sale of Dembele would be a nice bonus to add to what we already have.

But, of course, Dembele has also only been in France for less than a year. It would be a huge surprise if Lyon were looking to cash in after only 15 goals having been scored. The French giants have the financial muscle to reject a big-money move for their prized-asset, so there’s hardly any pressure there.

Lyon sit third in Ligue 1, and will still have hopes of pipping Lille to second. Dembele, you have to think, would’ve hoped to have achieved more with Lyon than he has this season alone. The French side were also mauled out of the Champions League by Barcelona at the last-16 stage.

But regardless, all of the summer speculation on Dembele is exciting for us. Hopefully, a deal can be done and we have more funds to improve our own squad before the new campaign.
