Scotland manager Alex McLeish has explained the delight in Callum McGregor’s eyes after receiving the Scotland captaincy.
With both Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney injured, the armband was passed over to McGregor. It’s the first time he’s taken the role of on-field leader for his country. This afternoon will be his 10th cap for Scotland too on a proud day against Kazakhstan.
The Celtic man was often overlooked by previous manager Gordon Strachan. But, under McLeish, McGregor has been at the forefront of every competitive game the Scots have faced.

And, speaking in the Daily Record, McLeish touched on how McGregor reacted after hearing the news.
“I invited Callum to my room for a chat before we came to train and we spoke about other things to do with his game.
“Then I threw it in and said I’d like him to be captain for the match. His eyes lit up and it was a great feeling to say that to somebody. It was just great to see how chuffed he was.
“Callum was probably thinking, ‘Ooft, being captain of my country, it’s some honour.’ He’s a great example to every young footballer in Scotland who wants to be a professional. Every time you point something out to Callum he takes it on board, whether it’s good or bad. He just doesn’t get flustered.”
Will take it in his stride
One key aspect of McGregor’s game is not allowing baggage to affect his performances on the pitch. He may still be on cloud nine after being named captain, but he’ll still be as reliable as ever.
Neil Lennon may also want to have a watch tonight too. McGregor, you have to imagine, is one of the candidates for the Celtic captaincy when Scott Brown eventually hangs up his boots. How he performs and leads on the pitch tonight could make some heads turn at Parkhead.

What’s even more impressive is that this has come despite being out for nearly a month. McGregor only returned to full fitness last week, and made his comeback in the 1-0 win at Dundee on Sunday.
It was only a matter of time before he started becoming a key figure for Scotland too. His game has come on ridiculously well over the last 36 months. Now, he’s starting to fully reap the rewards of that progression.
As for tonight, howver, just please avoid injury Callum!
