Playing for Celtic is every supporter’s dream. Pulling on those green and white hoops and running out onto the Parkhead turf is what every fan would love to do.

For a professional footballer though, it’s slightly different though, isn’t it? Unless they are connected to Celtic in some way, playing for the Parkhead club is just a job.

There is no emotion or anything unless they are like Joe Hart and Alistair Johnston who both found a real connection with the club and the Celtic supporters after joining.

And it seems that for Johnston in particular, playing for Celtic is something he genuinely loves doing now.

Alistair Johnston loves Celtic’s ‘story’

The Canadian is a popular player amongst the fans because they can see that he gets it when he plays for the club.

Johnston has only been at the club for over 18 months but here he explains how has actually been following Celtic since 2012.

Johnston said [FourFourTwo print edition page 5], “One of my first Celtic memories was actually a Wanyama goal, in the famous 2-1 win against Barcelona in 2012.

“I’d always want to watch Celtic in the Champions League, to see the atmosphere at Celtic Park and the famous green-and-white hoops.

“Being a part of this club’s story gives me goosebumps. You can’t get your head around how massive and special this club is until you’ve seen it for yourself.

“Losing or drawing matches in Scotland is not acceptable – our duty is to win.”

A treble-winner, Johnston’s name is already etched into the Celtic history books. If he hangs around the club long enough, who is to say that the Canadia can’t become a legend at the club?

Since making his debut against Rangers in 2022, Johnston has won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup.

If the right-back can help Celtic push forward in Europe to make the latter stages of the Champions League and continue to add silverware to his collection, there is no reason to think that he won’t be held in the same high regard as the likes of Mikael Lustig for what he achieved at the club.
